Test Structure

The TestAS (Test for Academic Studies) is a standardized aptitude test designed for non-EU students aspiring to pursue undergraduate studies at German universities. It assesses cognitive abilities relevant to academic success and is recognized by numerous institutions across Germany.

 Test Structure

The TestAS comprises three main components:

Language Test (on Screen)

Duration: 30 minutes

Purpose: Evaluates general language proficiency in either German or English.

Note: This is a preliminary, unscored section. 

Core Test

Duration: 110 minutes

Content: Four task groups:

Quantitative problems

Inferring relations

Completing patterns

Continuing numerical series


Format: Multiple-choice questions

Exam Pattern

TestAS is available in two formats: Digital and Paper-based. Both formats assess the same skills and place the same demands on participants.testas.de+1testas.de+1


1. OnScreen Language Test (30 minutes)

Purpose: Measures language proficiency in either German or English.

Format: 30-minute online assessment.

Scoring: Unscored section; serves to familiarize candidates with the test's language requirements.edusupport.in


2. Core Test (110 minutes)

The Core Test evaluates general cognitive abilities necessary for successful study. It is divided into four groups of tasks:testas.de

Solving Quantitative Problems (45 minutes): Tests numerical thinking and the ability to solve mathematical problems.

Inferring Relations (10 minutes): Assesses logical and analytical thinking through word pair analogies.

Completing Patterns (20 minutes + 5 minutes reading): Measures the ability to recognize and complete visual patterns and structures.

3. Subject-Specific Module (Approximately 145–150 minutes)

Humanities, Cultural Studies, and Social Sciences

Engineering

Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences

Economics

Life Sciences (only in digital format)

Medicine (only in digital format)

Digital TestAS: Approximately 3.5 hours (including breaks).

Language: The test is available in both German and English. Candidates can choose the language in which they feel most comfortable.

Question Type: Multiple-choice format.

Note-Taking:

Paper-Based: Candidates can take written notes on provided concept paper during the exam.

Universities Recognizing TestAS

Many German universities consider TestAS scores during their admission process, especially for non-EU applicants. Institutions such as the University of Cologne, RWTH Aachen University, and the University of Heidelberg utilize TestAS results to assess applicants' suitability for their programs.


Scoring & Results

Scoring: Results are presented in percentile ranks and standard scores.

Validity: The TestAS certificate is valid indefinitely.

Accessing Results: Results are typically available 2–4 weeks post-exam via the TESTas PORTAL .
